First Meeting of Technical Task Force of GEF funded “Upscaling Global Forest Watch in Caucasus Region” Regional project

The 1st Meeting of Technical Task Force of GEF funded “Upscaling Global Forest Watch in Caucasus Region” Regional project organized by the Regional Environmental Center for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) took place on 4-5 September 2020.

The project is being implemented by the REC Caucasus, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme, World Resources Institute and Ministry of Environment of RA. The main objective of the project is to empower decision-makers in government and civil society with technology and information to help reduce deforestation, facilitate commitments to restoration and conserve forest biodiversity by developing innovative user-friendly tools that easily share information, provide on-the-fly analyses.

During the 1st Meeting of Technical Task Force following topics were discussed: (i) national priorities of decision made within the land use, forest and biodiversity sectors, (ii) national land use challenges and landscape restoration options, (iii) the conditions necessary for successful implementation of different restoration options.

Participants were introduced to the opportunities provided by the online Forest atlases. Also, the questions related to forest restoration opportunity mapping at a national scale were discussed.
